There are so many parents in this free-spirited, unconventional small town who won't get their kids vaccinated that federal researchers are paying money just to hear their side of things.

Do you vaccinate your kids or have you decided against it? What are your reasons?
I have a son with autism and so, for our new baby, have chosen an alternative vaccine schedule as suggested by Dr. Sears in his Vaccine Book. I am not anti-vaccine, but have seen enough concerns over how many, how fast to give me serious pause. I think the cookie-cutter approach may not be in the best interest of all children. The CDC, in my opinion, has been too terrified to really look at this issue: how many do we give them at once and could it affect SOME of the population badly. We have seen autism, ADHD, asthma, and other childhood afflicitions rise steadily as we have gone from 10 shots before age 5 to 36 shots before age five now, if you follow all recommendations. I would love to see serious studies on this issue.
Everybody has an anecdote about some kid they know: "My sister's friend's son Timmy was perfectly normal. But then they vaccinated him and now he's autistic!" Hey folks: anecdotes aren't evidence. Just because your "natural parental instincts" imagine a corellation between vaccines and autism, you think you can put your fingers in your ears and go "la la la" when somebody reads you the real, peer-effing-reviewed studies by real scientists?
By the way, the specifics of the autism paranoia revolved around a preservative called thiomersal. Here's the thing though, when the hysteria erupted back in the 90s, thiomersal ceased to be added to vaccines! So even if there were a corellation between vaccines and autism, which scientific consensus says there isn't, it would be a moot issue.
Science FTW.
Stygian Lamprey claims thimerosal was removed in the 90's. That is not true. Thimerosal is still in the flu shot and the tetanus in the same amount. It is also in the other vaccines in lesser amounts but it is still there.
So, we see that people who want to claim thimerosal does not cause autism are quite willing to lie about the facts.
In my case, I chelated the mercury out of my severely autistic son's brain so he is now partially cured and keeps improving. The fact that autistic kids can be cured by removing the mercury from their brains proves that mercury causes autism. The debate is over but the coverup and propaganda continue.
Yes, we vaccinate. No, I'm scared of it. What I am scared of is those "independent thinkers" who decide not to vaccinate because of what a mother in their kids' playgroup told them or because of what they read on a website. It doesn't make it true just because it's on the internet! Unvaccinated children DO put others at risk. Like children who aren't old enough for a certain vaccine, children who have immune problems such as cancer that prohibit them from getting vaccines, and the fetuses of pregnant adult women. So...all of these little girls growing up now who have not been immunized...think about this scenario...in 20 years one of them is pregnant, she is in line at the airport next to someone from a foreign country that doesn't vaccinate, and she gets rubella, chicken pox, whatever. She has now damaged/killed that fetus. Not a far-fetched idea. Just get past your "independent thinking" and realize that we are all in this together - much as we all may wish, are lives are linked to everyone else we ever come in contact with. Read real medical research, listen to your pediatrician who has spent a significant part of his/her life to help YOUR child be healthy and in doing so help other children be healthy, too.
Shoot, forgot to include this link. I apologize if it's a bit tough to get through, but that's scientific literature for ya; it rewards a good solid time investment.
Also, Jenny McCarthy should go back to whatever unnecessary job she used to do before she decided to go into the "unsubstantiated medical claims about her magical indigo child" business.
I have an autistic 4.5 year old son and another son who just turned 2. My wife and I aren't totally against vaccinations but, we are choosing an alternative vaccination schedule with our younger son Dylan and only choosing vaccinations that are totally necessary. I think that the current vaccination schedule that most pediatricians use today is too many vaccinations too early for children at such a young age. I remember before my first child Alex was 12 months old they would inject him with as many as 5 different shots in one office visit. When was it decided that this was the best method of delivering vaccinations? Are children so young capable of handling that much foreign substance being injected into their bodies without future medical complications,I don't think so. I'm not a doctor but, today's vaccination schedule for young children doesn't make sense to me.
Scientific studies commissioned by pharmicudical companies regarding the saftey of their products represent a conflict of interest in my view. Clearly (if you think about it)injecting multiple deseases into the bloodstream of an infant is reckless at best. If you should get a desease like chicken pox, normaly, it wouldn't be presented directly into the blood stream. I was born in the 50's and we all got the mumps, measles, chickenpox ...etc. everyone seems ok today despite it . There was some retardation in the child population back then but not autism. Autism is a very different disorder, it's not just another label for retardation. Some children are likely predisposed to autism triggered by toxins in vaxination bombardment, cleaning chemicals...etc. The drug companies make a fortune from vaxinations and are willing to sacrifice the occasional child to autism or crones disease for such extraordinary wealth. The scope of what is going on here is very disturbing. If it's your choice to vaxinate, then it should be your choice not to vaxinate. So, if you believe strongly that vaxinating works, then why would you care if someone else isn't vaxinated? While you are at it, go get a flu shot. There must be 600 strains of flu out there and you have a 600 to 1 chance they'll give you the right shot.
Stygian Lamprey, thimersol has not been removed from all shots.
There has never been a single epidemiological study showing a link between vaccines and autism. There has been no evidence that researchers have found that link the two. Of course, that does not rule out the possibility.
Vaccines contain thimerosal which have ethylmercury. Mercury is harmful to the human body and has been shown to cause neurological problems.
Here's a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Immunization Safety Review Committee. In it five studies have been done in different countries since 2001 and there has been no link found. I think we should continue to research autism and the possibility of a link however, all in the medical community cannot see a link between the two. The FDA required that thimersol be removed and reduced from vaccines and since 1999 all recommended vaccines for infants do not contain thimersol or only contain small amounts. Mercury has been shown to cause problems in HIGH doses.
I suggest going to google scholar and searching for autism and thirmersol. They are lots of research papers showing no link between the two. These are ACTUAL RESEARCH PAPER WRITTEN BY SCIENTISTS AND RESEARCHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
Hi Franken and Stygian,
According to the FDA's website as of June 2008, "Thimerosal has been removed from or reduced to trace amounts in all vaccines routinely recommended for children 6 years of age and younger, with the exception of inactivated influenza vaccine." The same page lists a table of vaccines with their compositions as well.
I can never post links on Newsvine so if someone would tell me how to do it without it disappearing when I post, let me know! Franken, let me also know where you see other vaccines that have thimerosol in them still that the FDA doesn't include.
No, I DO NOT vaccinate! My concern is not so much the actual vaccine, but all of the additives they put into those things. It's practically poison. Yeah, you don't smoke a cigarette and imediatly keel over, but there are consiquences to putting POISON into your body. And God forbid this world have "free thinkers"! Maybe the key term there should be "thinkers" because we seem to be the only one's doing it.
The rise in Autism is certainly a major concern. I think it would help if we can discover the cause of autism that would lay aside fears first. Perhaps rates of autism from non-immunized children could be studied.
A neighbor of mine with a three year old had been vaccinated for whooping cough and in the new few months turned into a vegetable. He can't speak, he can't walk and he can in no way communicate. This little boy was fine until the immunization. I think vaccinations are outdated and do more harm than good.
I'm convinced that the science doesn't support the autism link. The rise in autism rates is easily attributed to other factors, like the rise of Ausperger's rates in the available gene pool.
I didn't vaccinate my kids (with the exception of polio) because I wanted them to have strong immune systems, and the only way for them to develop that is to exercise their immune systems early by fighting off childhood diseases. The lifetime benefits of a strong immune system are vast, and vaccination clearly is not as effective as the real thing in terms of strengthening the immune system.
Vaccination has saved many lives, to be sure. But it's also weakened the collective natural immunity of the human species to the point where the next Spanish Influenza could easily wipe out the majority of the developed world. Is it worth the risk? Not in my view.
Scarlet fever was the scourge in the 19th century and no vaccine was needed to get it under control. I don't understand why people can't get measles when they are young so the immune system an be strengthened. If another plague hits the earth, then we will have to deal with it. Yet the children who have been hurt by vaccines means it is not worth it. Go to the nvic org site and read about it and them.
Because vaccines have never been shown to be safe or effective. The Federal government has paid out billions to vaccine damaged children. There has been so much research that shows the damage that can occur, including Autism. A like was shown with the MMR vaccine I believe. Children are used as guinea pigs. They are so vulnerable and assaulted by dozens of vaccines by the time they are 3. It is too much for them to stand and it has such a major impact on them. Go to the NVIC site and read about some of the harm. It is worth it.
Vaccines haven't been shown to be effective?! Tell that to the generations growing up in the early/mid part of the 1900's! When did you last see a case of polio? Or diptheria? Or mumps? The list goes on...
And the reason the government has paid out "billions" to vaccine damaged children is because of paranoid, sue-happy parents who can't accept that their children could have something wrong with them and have to have something to blame it on!
The demise of polio was directly related to improvements in modern sanitation. eg flush toilets, and running water. Studies clearly show the correlation. Drug companies would have you believe the polio vaccine did it all, but this disease was in decline prior to mass vaxinating and continued the same pace of decline afterward. Polio vaccine the poster child is not what we were made to believe.
The reason the government paid out billions to parents of vaccine damaged children was because - their children had been proven to be damaged by vaccines.
Did you know that the Aids virus was caused by mass vaccinations in Africa. That is why initialy it spread so quickly.
Denise, where was the vaccine for Scarlet Fever? This disappeared in the time frame as the others you mentioned.
My son recently died from leukemia which the doctors said he had since he was a child. There was no incidence of cancer, particularly leukemia, in either of his parents' heritage. I am not convinced that the vaccines he had as a child did not contribute to breaking down his immune system leading to his death. There are also higher incidence of bipolar behavior and ADD in kids with vaccines.
Leukemia is not genetic, so there doesn't have to be anyone in the family with it. And I'd like to see your research on higher incidence of bipolar behavior and ADD in kids with vaccines.
Have you ever seen a brain damaged child from a DPT shot? A permanently disabled registered nurse from her required Hep. B prevention? Bedridden for the rest of his life! And the lady has no life but she does have MS! Do you know the pittance the government will give you to provide for that child, or let you stay in that wheelchair, if you can prove it? Our research is grossly lagging. I predict our next scourge of humanity will be in history repeating itself in the latest discoveries of disease. Hey people do you know why they never came up with a Syphilis vaccine? Aids appears to be the baby in diapers compared to what can happen if blood supplies become contaminated with borreliosis. The tests are tragically prime at estimate of 50/50. Can you tell me that something like this cannot happen to our vaccines and blood supplies. Can't happen to our children. No you cannot. Should I vainly try to protect my child from a disease that only occurs if they are sexually active, or one that is not even on the map. Or one that does sometimes kill but usually only those with a unknown genetic deficiency. Does their efficacy remain into adult hood? Did it take at all? Just how would they know? Did they follow any into adulthood? Ok people lets get our caps on and get to work. I believe it is all in the genes. And those have dramatically changed in the last 40 yrs. Especially with the introduction of SV40. Thank You very much. I'll Pass
There are hundreds of links to Leukemia and vaccines. Sv40 can and should be tested for in all blood diseases. But it is not. They CDC or government agencies don't advertise this genetic defect they accidentally instilled into the public. Which is now known to be genetically transmitted through generations.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your story reminded me of another I had read. Go to OurAlexander.org. These parents have proved (in my eyes) there was a link between their son's brain tumor & the vaccines he received. Worst of all, the FDA mandated what kind of treatment he should receive which the FDA knew was not a proven cure. It's disgusting that we as parents have the right to choose to bring a child into this world or not but then the govt agencies will step in & try to rule your choices on vaccinations/medical care. I chose to have my daughter vaccinated (she's now 10) I was one of those young naive mothers that could not go against the herd. I was worried she would need to be home-schooled if I went the non-vaccination route. After much more research and reading stories like yours, I would welcome the likes of chicken-pox, measles, mumps, whooping cough, etc. over autism & cancer. I'm proud to say my almost 4 yr old son is completely non-vaccinated and so much healthier for it. What a difference between my daughters/sons 1st years. Coincidence maybe but I doubt it!
Maybe people can't help but remain stupid and rely on rumor rather than data.
On the contrary, public officials are not working from the correct hypothesis regarding results from children diagnosed with autism after having their shots. They are starting with the idea that they don't cause autism. Also before a child is 6 years old if they receive every shot the doctor tells them is necessary they will get 48 separate shots. It can be checked on line. I am a grandparent of 11 including one grandson who is autistic. We can document that after the MMR he totally changed from a child who played with toys & mimicked others around him. Another grandson was scheduled for shots with the pediatrician & my daughter was told he would be getting 5 separate that day. She chose only 3. Even that is absurd to me. Our family is so aware of this issue. I had every known childhood disease & I am a very healthy 66 year old today. My resistance is very high & my immune system is excellent. Maybe its because I had those dreaded childhood diseases. To me it's all about the MONEY. A few of those vaccines are very important especially the polio. My daughter who is now 34 never had the smalllpox vaccine because they quit giving them back in the 70's. What's up with that? As long as the powers that be make the decision I guess it's ok, but if a parent decides what goes into their child then it is wrong. Wake up parents & make decisions for yourself. Thanks for listening.

Before my sister had her oldest son vaccinated, he was a perfectly normal little boy. He was talking extremely well for his age. After she had him vaccinated, his speech is very distorted, among other things. He is now borderline autistic. I agree with RUKIDDING. Vaccinations are outdated and do more harm than good.
So you're saying don't vaccinate, so instead of the "next" Spanish influenza, your kid will "develop a strong immune system" and unfortunately die or get very sick from a preventable disease. The rise in autism is due to people diagnosing virtually everything under the sun as autism (much like we did with ADHD a decade ago). If you notice, the decrease in "mental retardation" correlates quite nicely with the increase in autism. So essentially, we're just re-categorizing things, and the levels are not increasing as much as you think.
Science has proven that A) autism has no link to vaccines, B) vaccines help the general public stay safe from preventable disease, and C) the risk of not vaccinating is what we're seeing now, which is a rise in measles, whooping cough (i.e. stuff that we could have prevented). Talk to the parents who've lost kids to these diseases because they didn't vaccinate. That'll make you rethink your decision really quickly.
Vaccination not as effective? A little pin prick here instead of the threat of multiple childhood diseases ravaging your child's body, then having them have immunity (if they survive). Yeah, that's much better. Get a life. Vaccinate your child so that he can keep his own life. Fears are just that: fears. No scientific evidence, just fears. So go on, be scared if you wish. You'll wish you had vaccinated them the minute they come down with more than just a simple case of the sniffles.
Vaccinations for newborn infants?????? Just sounds plain crazy to me--runs agains all inherent, instinctual parental logic. My daughter received ZERO vaccinations until she was six years old. Then just the basic ones were spread out. She has been a very healthy child with rare bouts of even the most common ailments. I was even reluctant to have the later shots given to her considering how our health care system is so diseased with corruption by the special interests of the drug manufacturers and the hospitals and doctors that they pander to. In big business the little guy usually gets squashed -- in this case it most applies to the literal sense of little--as in the children. If you don't think the drug companies have massive amounts of control over our health care system, then just watch TV any day of the week and notice all the pharmecutical ads--disgusting that they are even allowed on TV.
As a parent, I have concerns about the safety of vaccination. I think it's rediculous to administer the chicken pox vaccine to children because chicken pox is not a deadly plague, it is a childhood disease that is mostly an inconvenience. Why prevent this disease in children, when catching the disease in most cases prevents people from catching it in their teenage or adult years. I also have a moral objection to giving kids a vaccine that was developed using aborted fetuses (I usually call them babies, not fetuses). To kill one child to prevent another from getting what amounts to a rash is rediculous.
Maybe try doing some research about chicken pox. No, it's not a "deadly plague", but it sure HAS killed children. It has dire effects on the fetus if a pregnant adult woman gets it.
If as an ADULT you haven't gotten Chicken Pox, then by all means, take responsibility for YOURSELF and go get the vax. But don't for it upon my 9 mo. old BABY to get some shot to protect you.
Diseases that have long since been dead are now back. That's because parents refuse to vaccinate. Where is the proof that vaccines are causing these issues? Perhaps it's the overuse of cleaning, too many sanitizers and lack of germs. I agree to let kids get sick and build an immunity, but there are some things I just don't want my kids to get! And I definitely don't want chicken pox, which can cause horrible scarring, in a teen or adult. Until the proof is there, not rumors, proof, then I will continue to vaccinate!
I agree. Vaccines are good. We no longer have outbreaks of deadly diseases because of them. It's so easy for fearful parents to become complacent thinking about how those diseases are "no big deal" because they didn't have to suffer through them in their lifetime. Do I agree with spreading out the vaccines to make parents more comfortable? Sure. I can understand the concern about how many vaccines are given, and when. But children SHOULD get vaccines.
Do I think they cause autism? No. That myth has been debunked over and over again but you get upset parents of autistic children (understandably so, I'm not knocking them) who in my small opinion need something to blame. That's just my opinion and I'm entitled to it. And yes, I know autistic children whose parents actually don't blame the vaccines and continue to vaccinate their other children. Amazing but true.
One day when we have all of these deadly diseases back, and parents who refuse to vaccinate are watching their children die of measles and polio, maybe it will click and people will get it. I hope that's not what it takes, but that's what I envision happening if we continue on this track.
dealing with horrible scarring on the outside is much easier than dealing with it on the inside and emotionally. Until it touches your family you will NEVER understand. I hope and pray that it never does for your sake.
Jaime, gotta call you on this one. Can you show where the myth has been undisputably debunked? If you can, count me in.
I think people get hung up on the autism thing and never consider the many other adverse effects of vaccines. The statistics for the rise in other auto-immune diseases as well as ADD/ADHD are alarming. And there is great research out there now indicating that the epidemic of peanut allergies in this country is one we have vaccinated ourselves right into.
Vaccines work b/c they slowly kill off parts of your immune system. This is not a fix. Not to mention, vaccines do not undergo the same safety testing that other drugs do before being put out on the mass market. For ex. gardisil has NO long term studies. NONE. So what happens in 15 years when all of these 10year old girls that were pumped full of this vaccine turn up with fertility issues?? We say "oops, we missed that?"
There are MANY MANY reasons parents choose not to vaccinate their children. It should not be assumed or even intimated that the choice is based solely on the fear of autism.
After the whooping cough vaccination my infant daughter became rigid and screamed for the better part of a day. Our pediatrician advised that we never give her another and we didn't. At 7 (in 1994) she was given her Hep B series, after the 2nd shot she developed Guillian-Barre Syndrome.. We were assured that there was no connection, however GBS is now listed as an adverse reaction. Last year she had a Hep A shot so that she could go to Honduras and developed an irregular heartbeat for which she took medication for several months.
My son-in- law developed severe tachycardia and arrythmia after receiving the vaccinations for deployment. He now is disabled although he had no previous heart problems.
Is this all coincidental? It's possible, but I think there is plenty of cause for concern.
My children are now beyond the age of most vaccines, but recently I was asked if I wanted to have my 14 year old daughter vaccinated with Gardasil. My answer was an absolute NO! This vaccine was developed by the same company that lied to us all about VIOXX. I have completely lost my confidence in drug companies to be forthcoming regarding the dangers and risks of their products. I explained my concerns to the doctor and then went home and dicsussed it the risks at length with my daughter regarding the vaccine and why it is used. The bottom line is more money for the drug companies and our children are paying the price.
wbms
Good for you for the choice. This vaccine is loaded with aluminum and that is a neurological toxin. Just educate yourself and ask questions. Also the first state to want to make Gardasil mandatory was Texas. Guess who was the number one contributor to the Governor of Texas campaign? Merck. Guess who makes Gardisil?? Yep..Merck. Any immunization can be googled and downloaded for ingredients..just educate yourself and don't just follow the herd...
Good for you, webms. You and Tracey are the only people I have seen make this important connection. Merck is an extremely unethical company who tried very hard to force this largely untested vaccine onto young girls all for the sake of the company's bottom line, and then tried to force the vaccination into law when people weren't going for it. Disgusting and unethical conflict of interest. I would never take anything produced by this company. They have very little regard for the health and safety of their consumers.
Hi Web, Tracey and Andrea,
I understand your concern, but I would advise that you read the initial clinical trial research before you make your conclusions. I cite from the 2007 article in Lancet titled "Efficacy of a prophylactic adjuvanted bivalent L1 virus-like-particle vaccine against infection with human papillomavirus types 16 and 18 in young women: an interim analysis of a phase III double-blind, randomised controlled trial " You can read the full trial as it is registered with the US National Institutes of Health clinical trial registry, number NCT00122681.
This clinical trial was performed in order to see how well the vaccine (later to be named Gardasil) did to prevent the most frequent strains of HPV. They innoculated more than 9000 women with the vaccine and had more than 9000 women in the control group. Basically, in the end, 2 got HPV in the vaccine group compared with 12 in the control group.
Please read clinical trial information before you make up your minds. Actually, what you really should do is read all the primary information from when the virus was identified to cause the disease to when they finally had a commerical product to be sure. No big-pharma company ever invests in a vaccine unless the poor lowly researcher can prove something substantial.
I would suggest that the reason that most people don't vacinate their children is because the vast majority of parents do vacinate their children people have been able to forget how horrible many of these diseases are. Very few parents today have ever seen a child with polio or a young teenage boy who has become infertile because mumps. Parents feel that it is safe not to vacinate their children because of herd immunity (since almost all kids are vacinated unvacinated children are protected by the fact that a disease cannot get a foothold in a population). Once there are enough parents who don't vacinate their children the diseases will come back and they everybody will run as fast as they can to their pediatricians office to protect their children since it will become readily aparrent that all the effort that was put into developing these vacines derived from the desire to protect children from horrible diseases. While it is true that many of these diseases can be dealt with by the immune system of a child they are infact much much worse when contracted by an unvacinated adult. When that happens to your children it's on your head what you have done to your child.
When that happens to your children it's on your head what you have done to your child.
I always love this part of the argument. As if to say you sincerely hope our children get some life threatening disease so you can dance and point and shout I told you so.
And you have made a pretty big assumption about the "vast majority." But since we are talking in generalizations I would say that the "vast majority" of folks that are parents now that were fully vaccinated were only vaccinated for a small handful of things.
NOW?? We are told to vaccinate for many many things. Some still with live virus compounds. Our children are expected to take up upwards of 20 differents vaccines before the age of 2; before anyone's immune system is fully developed.
When I was a wee lad, my mom had a habit of doing "pox parties", where children were intentionally exposed to Chicken Pox just so they would develop a natural immunity to the diseases. I have two younger brothers, but my mom only got away with doing the pox parties on me before the doctors tried to nail her for child neglect solely because she would not vaccinate my brothers. Unfortunately, at the time, the doctors won their case and my mom was ordered to get them vaccinated. The only shots I had at the time were the MMR vaccine and a tetanus shot. The downside to the "pox parties" in childhood is the chicken pox virus is not killed, it instead goes dormant and takes up residence in the nervous system and re-awakens as Shingles. Also, I was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at age 7, but nobody in my family has had Autism. I do not believe autism is caused by vaccines; instead, I believe it is caused by genetic mutations (or in this case, deletions), where sections of code in a particular gene were erased completely, with the severity of autism being solely dependant on the amount of deleted code.
Here is what scientific studies have shown about the possible cause of autism, taken from UCLA research studies: For the first time, a team of UCLA geneticists have isolated the likely region of an autism gene on chromosome 17 and then successfully duplicated their efforts in a separate population. In an earlier discovery, the scientists were surprised to find that the gene contributes to autism only in boys, perhaps explaining why girls have a dramatically lower risk of developing the disease. After twice linking the risk gene to band 17Q21, the UCLA team is now conducting DNA testing to identify the precise site on the chromosome, which will bring them closer to finding the gene mutation. This is the first step to providing better screening and potential treatments for autism.
Anyway, ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper, my mom has had a habit of intentionally exposing me to various diseases to strengthen my immune system. I am 25 years old now, and I cannot even remember the last time I got the flu. Heck, I cannot even remember the last time I had a flu shot. Everyone in my family gets the flu every year, but it seems to pass me like I do not exist. The worst I get from the flu outbreaks is itchy, watery eyes, a sneezing fit, and sometimes a dry, raspy throat. Nothing that would stop me from continuing with work or school.
My son has never had a vaccination. Now he is six years old and has never really been sick other then the usual runny nose, caught, and once he said that he did not feel well and crawled in to bed and slept off 'something'. The latest argument I heard was that children should get vaccinations to protect other children. What? And, in this article there is talk about rising measles. I have yet seen statistics as to who is getting the measles or other "preventable" llnesses - I want to know if the sick have been vaccinated against whatever they caught among other data. As a note concerning my son's health, we have never been concerned about him catching anything and have never been the sterilizing, germ-Phobs.
Hi James,
Your views are focused on the diseases that your son may come in contact with, however, I might ask you to consider the diseases that might come in contact with him. The distinction is that while until recently your pathogenic environment might have been relatively stable, the fact is that the world really is getting smaller. This means that things (people, foods) are now coming into contact with you at a higher rate than you might have been exposed to in the past. A great example is TB.
When they speak about children protecting children, they are talking about "herd immunity." In order to survive, a pathogenic organism like a virus needs a certain amount of "hosts." They need hosts to replicate in and thus pass on the virus. The idea is, when there are enough people vaccinated there are therefore not enough hosts. There are not enough hosts because people that are vaccinated should be able to kill off the virus completely before it has a chance to replicate in the initital host enough to be passed on.
Herd immunity is important because it gives the population strength against biological attack. If you can infect the entire herd quickly enough, you can kill the herd.
Oh, I have read the stats on some of these so-called outbreaks. The big 'epidemic' a few years back on that college campus--out of the 100 that had it, 80 had been vaccinated. They think the disease came in from a foreign student, so the American vaxed students caught it anyway. Diseases mutate. And we have managed to create superviruses in our quest to vaccinate them all away.
All the evidence points toward no connection. Yet parents continue to believe in what people such as Jenny McCarthy has to say. Personally I would listen to a medical doctor, whom has dedicated a large part of their life to such matters than to some one such as McCarthy (an Actress) or even myself (an Artist).
I have been living in Sweden for the last 2 1/2 yrs. When I told my Swedish wife and her family about this issue in the US, they just reacted as if I was telling them that this must not be a current issue, but one from the early 1900's or something. Quite sad to see American sciencist not given the respect and gratitude for all the major advances that they have made.
I would also recommend listening to The Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast if you are interested hearing more about this subject, or a recent NPR: This American Life
Until real, scientifically valid proof is put forth that vaccines do in fact do more harm than good, I will support vaccines as sound, good medicine.
I believe that Mr. Darwin got it right, the most fit of we animals are the survivors. Maybe those not vaccinating are the animals that natural selection will weed out over the long run.
Are your knuckles dragging on the ground too? There are those people who are more suspectable to things than others. Maybe these children are our canarys in the coal mines. I don't think anyone can argue with the rise in cancers and other illness that are related to the environment around us. Chemicals, pesticides and other toxins are in the foods you eat, the air you breath and yes, even in the medications you take. Go to your doctor and ask to look at the ingredients...even you will be shocked
Then don't worry about your choice. Let Darwinism weed out the weaker. Darwinism shouldn't need laws to make it work if it is a viable scientific theory.
You people are idiots. Vaccines prevent diseases that could kill your children (and yes, children have died of chicken pox). The autism-vaccine link has been disproven in study after study after study. Children get the MMR vaccine and then develop autism? How about they get the MMR at 18 months and autism is not demonstrated until 18-24 months? Correllation does not equal causation. My cousin has autism, he and his three other siblings were all vaccinated. Autism is genetic, more research is done every day. And it is not increasing, it is just being diagnosed at a more accurate rate.
People like you idiots are making other kids whose responsible parent DID vaccinate them sick. You shouldn't be allowed to have children.
If children who have been vaccinated are protected from diseases then how can unvaccinated children be giving vaccinated children any of these diseases. This is irrational thinking if I ever saw it!
WOW...you really need to educate yourself a little better. Funny thing happened in my daughter's school. Over 80% of the kids were given the flu shot. We never get the shot. Guess who the kids were who were absent from school repeatedly over the past 2 months...all the ones that received the flu shot. Sooner or later people like you will realize that there IS some correlation that even You can't argue with...even though you seem like you like to argue.....lots of anger there..
Most of us older adults just had the basics standard set of shots and are doing just fine without the 36 other shots. It is all a marketing and money making scheme. When my oldest who is now 24 was in 8th grade over 1/2 of her class had reactions to vaccines and could not longer have any vaccines. I my oldest daughter developed Guille-Barre symdrome when the new requirement came out that all kindergartners now needed boosters. They gave her MMR, polio and dpt. I asked the nurse before it was administered if she was sure that was ok since they had always broken them apart before. She assured me it was just fine. Guess what it was too much for her system. Within in a few days her hands shook like an old person with shaky hands and her legs were so week she would collapse upon rising in the morning. After a year of tests I saw a local news show that showed another girl that had developed the same reaction after vaccination. Her doctor gave her gammoglobin to counteract the vaccination. I then told my doctor and he suggested for my other children to spread the shots apart by at least 6 months. He also indicated that she should never receive another immunization because it could kill her. Since that time I have had 4 nieces who also reacted the same way to various vaccinations. You never heard about so many children reacting in my day and age because we had less shots. But even then there were children who were killed by vaccines or had severe brain damage.
Drug companies pay doctors big money to push their wares and poison. Stop following the sheep and think for yourself. After many years of being fed up with the medical profession I do mostly holistic therapies and have had excellent results and with no adverse side effects. Intelligent people do their own research and then make a decision. Drug companies and doctors are fear mongers and drug pushers. We have been lied to time and time again. It is time for parents to say enough!
There is no reason to flame people who don't think like you do. My son has been diagnosed with autism and he had DNA tests done. He has no genetic markers or deletions or family history of autism. He has had an MRI and it is perfectly normal. Autistic brains in research have shown enlargement and inflammation. He was seen at the Mayo Clinic. Doctors are in the dark with autism even at the top level like the Mayo Clinic. You want to talk about proof? There is no medical evidence in the diagnosis of autism - it is subjective based on observations. When autism is diagnosed with a medical test, then you can talk proof. Until then, eat your own words!
Who do you work for, Merck? Bristol Myers Squibb?
Luckily, I was sick constantly up to age 10. I'm now 30 years old and in that 20 year span, the only sicknesses I've gotten are brief(only lasting a few hours each) bouts of the cold with sneezing and runny nose. It was worth being sick constantly my 1st 10 years of life in order to be healthy the next 20 years on.
I am very disappointed in this author. I work in neonatal nursing. I give about 300 Hepatitis B Vaccines (HBV) every year. Many times, other nurses ask me to administer their babies' vaccines because I am not sqeamish about it.
I am also a parent. Neither of my sons has ever had Prevnar, Hepatitis C or Measles Vaccines. I have delayed the administration of these vaccines because I have questions about their efficacy and safety.
This author failed to contradict the mother who says HBV is only transmitted by sex. HBV is transmitted by blood, body fluids and contact with same. Sometimes using someone elses personal item (even a toothbrush) that comes in contact with blood can cause transmission.
The author should have contradicted this poorly misinformed woman. I do understand parents who choose not to get HBV vaccine. Usually, they take the info home and agree to think about getting the baby vaccinated at a later date.
Please, to those of you who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Learn about HBV vaccine, erythromycin eye ointment, vitamin K and commercial formulas. Take baby care classes right after your childbirth class is over.
Jim, RN BSN
Oh dear god, I'm supposed to listen to a nurse that's encouraging new parents to learn about COMMERCIAL FORMULAS?!?!? Turn in your nursing degree, please.
Since when is LEARNING about various neonatal issues equivalent with embracing them? I do not think this nurse was urging anyone to USE commercial formula. YOU make that assumption. Why are posters on these threads so paranoid? Everyone must live with their own decisions. If you refuse vaccines for yourself or for your children (which it is your right to do) then live with the consequences. This means IF your baby should die from h.flu meningitis (like the baby who just died from it in Minnesota at 15 months of age and had never been immunized) then you have ONLY YOURSELF to blame. It's a simple although very sad equation. I believe parents who refuse immunizations should sign a waiver which makes it clear that should the baby then contract the disease the providers will be held blameless. This would show that those who deny vaccines have the courage of their convictions.
I am now a grandmother rather than a mom...But someone has to listen to these mothers that know for a fact that their babies were normal, making normal progress right up until their MMR shots...Or what ever shots....Im sure their are lots of children who got their shots and didn't have problem one.....But not everyones immune system is the same, some peoples are very strong, some are not....No one knows how every childs system is going to respond.... The results of a bad reaction are in many cases life long...Robbing the child of any hope of a normal life....Really listen to the mothers who's childrens lives have been altered ....They know of what they speak....!
I had a beautiful 4 1/2 yr little girl with long brown ringlet curls, olive skin and beautiful spirit. After being immunized and being on antibiotics as well as being told to rotate Tylenol and Motrin for and little "reaction" from the shots. I watched my daughter become gray, ashy, dark circles under her eyes and now completely bald. Now I have a beautiful little girl with no eyelashes, eyebrows or hair anywhere. We were told that she now has alopecia universalis. I watched this happen before my eyes and couldn't find one peditrician to listen to me or validate my feelings as a mother watching my daughter go through this. I did not vaccinate my youngest and she has never had a problem or missed school. We do alternative medicines and supplements and a very healthy and clean diet. I am not saying don't vaccinate, but even when you take your dog to the vet he asks how much the dog weighs and medicates according to the weight, we don't even give our perfect little babies that same respect. It can't be a one size fits all. Please visit our foundation and help raise awareness
I am so sorry for your daughter's ordeal. I, too, suffered with alopecia for a long time, not the extreme kind that your daugther lives with, but hair loss nonetheless, and I know first hand how devastating it is. I also know how difficult it is getting doctors to take this problem seriously. My best wishes to your daughter and you, and I hope that she finds something that works for her in terms of dealing with this horrible disorder.
